Most people under 50 in Portugal speak excellent English, but it's considered a courtesy to start conversations in Portuguese. Practice key phrases like 'Bom dia' (Good morning), 'Obrigado/a' (Thank you), and 'Boa noite' (Good night). Even just greeting or asking if someone speaks English in Portuguese is appreciated. -

Both Lisbon and Porto are famously hilly with lots of stairs and cobblestone streets. Some sellers on the street may try to offer illegal items—just ignore and continue. Despite this, Portugal is overall quite safe, especially for solo travelers. -
7. Plan for Unpredictable Weather and Busy Airports
Portugal’s weather can be fickle, particularly in Porto and during shoulder seasons, so pack a small umbrella and layers. Lisbon Airport is known for chaos, crowds, and late gate announcements—arrive early and avoid tight layovers.
